Warner Bros. Shifting Focus to Free-To-Play, Mobile, and Live-Service Titles

During a recent Morgan Stanley event, J.B. Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at Warner Bros. Discovery, announced a strategic shift in the company’s gaming strategy. Moving away from traditional AAA game releases, Warner Bros. intends to concentrate more on free-to-play, mobile, and live-service titles.

The decision comes in the wake of the less-than-stellar launch of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which underscored the need for a change in direction. Acknowledging the evolving dynamics of the gaming market, Warner Bros. aims to pivot towards service-oriented gaming experiences.

While the success of recent releases like Hogwarts Legacy has been notable, with over 22 million copies sold, the unpredictability of the gaming market necessitates a strategic reassessment. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s underperformance serves as a catalyst for this strategic shift, prompting the company to explore new avenues for success.

Perrette emphasized the strength of Warner  Discovery’s gaming portfolio, leveraging renowned brands such as Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and DC Comics. With 11 internal game development studios under its belt, the company is poised to capitalize on its unique position in the market.

Looking ahead, Perrette anticipates that gaming will drive significant growth for Warner Bros. Discovery in the years to come. By aligning its focus with the evolving preferences of gamers and leveraging its robust portfolio of intellectual properties, Warner Bros. aims to position itself for success in the dynamic gaming industry landscape.
