Shohei Ohtani Denies Involvement in Sports Betting Scandal, Accuses Interpreter of Theft

Shohei Ohtani vehemently denied any involvement in sports betting and disavowed any knowledge of gambling debts accumulated by his longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara.

Shohei Ohtani  Denial and Accusations

During a press conference held at Dodger Stadium, Shohei Ohtani addressed the allegations surrounding his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Ohtani, accompanied by Will Ireton, the Dodgers’ manager of performance operations, asserted that Mizuhara had deceived him for years and misappropriated funds amounting to millions.

Deception and Betrayal

Expressing shock and disappointment, Ohtani described Mizuhara’s actions as a betrayal of trust. He clarified that he had never engaged in sports betting nor knowingly facilitated any transactions with bookmakers. Ohtani highlighted instances where Mizuhara misled him, emphasizing his innocence in the matter.

Ongoing Investigation

Despite Shohei Ohtani assertions, the circumstances surrounding Mizuhara’s activities remain under scrutiny. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has initiated a criminal investigation into Mizuhara’s alleged connections to illegal gambling operations. Both Mizuhara and Mathew Bowyer, the purported bookmaker, are subjects of the investigation.

Ippei Mizuhara’s statements to the media regarding Ohtani’s involvement in settling gambling debts have been inconsistent. Initially, Mizuhara claimed that Ohtani had acquiesced to paying off the debts, only to retract his statements later, asserting that Ohtani had no knowledge of the transactions.

Ohtani revealed that he became aware of Mizuhara’s gambling issues during a team meeting following a game in Seoul, South Korea. The revelation, delivered in English by Mizuhara, initially bewildered Ohtani. It was only after the meeting, during a private conversation, that Ohtani learned the extent of Mizuhara’s debts and deceit.

Moving Forward

Despite the tumultuous circumstances, Ohtani remains focused on his career. He expressed gratitude for the support received from teammates and reiterated his commitment to cooperating with ongoing investigations. As the baseball season commences, Ohtani intends to delegate legal matters to his attorneys while concentrating on his performance on the field.
