Ormat Enters 30-Year PPA with EDF for New Geothermal Plant in Guadeloupe

Ormat, a leading renewable energy company, has recently inked a significant 30-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Electricité de France (EDF) for the establishment of a cutting-edge 10-MW geothermal power facility on the picturesque Island of Guadeloupe. Anticipated to commence operations by the conclusion of 2025, this venture underscores Ormat’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

Expanding Geothermal Portfolio in Guadeloupe

The forthcoming power plant, in which Or mat will maintain a notable 63.75% equity interest, represents a pivotal addition to the energy landscape of Guadeloupe. Notably, the island currently hosts the Bouillante geothermal power plant, a 15-MW facility in which Or mat secured a majority stake in 2016 from Geothermie Bouillante SA. This new endeavor reinforces Or mat’s dedication to bolstering renewable energy infrastructure in the region.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Enhanced Efficiency

Set to utilize a state-of-the-art sea water-cooled binary system, featuring Ormat Energy Converters (OEC) technology, the upcoming power plant promises efficient power generation across diverse enthalpy ranges. Strategically positioned approximately 100 meters above sea level and integrating an intermediate cooling loop, the system is designed to optimize energy efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

Strengthening Partnerships for Sustainable Growth

Doron Blachar, CEO of Ormat, highlighted the significance of the agreement with EDF, emphasizing the strategic value of their partnership. With this latest venture, alongside the recent signing for a 10-MW power plant in Dominica, Ormat is poised to expand its geothermal capacity in the Caribbean region to 35 MW by the end of 2025. This growth trajectory reflects Ormat’s unwavering commitment to delivering clean, renewable, and reliable power solutions while contributing to the sustainable development of the communities it serves.

The collaboration between Ormat and EDF also aligns with broader initiatives aimed at fostering energy transition in the Caribbean region. Under the ETC Interreg project for “Energy Transition in the Caribbean,” launched in 2023, innovative geophysical survey techniques are being leveraged to map the subsurface in Bouillante across various environments. This initiative underscores the collective commitment to advancing renewable energy technologies and driving sustainable development across the region.

In conclusion, Ormat’s latest venture in Guadeloupe represents a significant milestone in the company’s journey towards a more sustainable energy future. Through strategic partnerships, cutting-edge technology, and a steadfast commitment to innovation, Ormat continues to lead the charge in transforming the energy landscape while enhancing the quality of life for communities across the Caribbean region.
